Hi everyone, it's Karen here. This week we'll be discussing the "what-the-heck" effect, which is a cognitive distortion that negatively biases the way we process and responds to events.  In these tough moments, how can we ground ourselves with a more positive and helpful perspective? One possible strategy is to use affirmations.

Affirmations are phrases or words that can guide your thinking in more positive directions. They can help you feel better about yourself, feel less stress and enable you to manage your emotions. Positive affirmations have been shown to help people embrace new information, nurture intention to change and improve future behavior. Affirmations may even impact certain neurological pathways, altering how our brains interpret and respond to the environment. Affirmations go beyond wishful thinking - they are strong declarations that can spark change. Positive thoughts can lift you up, just as negatively-focused thoughts can do the opposite.

Here are some affirmations to assist you in changing your perspective and remaining optimistic when faced with challenges. Maybe you can come up with some of your own!

  • This too shall pass.

  • Tiny progress is still progress.

  • I can handle whatever comes my way.

  • I have the fortitude to endure discomfort.

  • I have wisdom within.

  • I don't break, I bend.

  • I am not alone in this.

  • Everything that I am is enough.
