Hello! You've got Vanessa here in blogland this week.

I just read an alarming statistic: in a 2020 online survey of almost 8,000 adults, 44% of them (mostly female, average age 51 years) reported that their sleep had worsened during the pandemic (10% of those polled said their sleep had improved, and I will definitely have what they're having PLEASE).

While there are no universal nutrition guidelines when it comes to food choice and sleep, there is some compelling evidence to consider (check out our Sleep & Nutrition handout and video from earlier this year). One recommendation that is related to nutrition and wellness is the use of aromatherapy, specifically lavender. Evidence with regard to the widespread efficacy of aromatherapy is mixed and limited, but there are several studies that demonstrate lavender can be effective with relaxation, stress relief, and sleep. Plus most of us just really enjoy the smell. Ways to use lavender include: applying a dot of essential oil on your forehead (test your individual sensitivity to the essential oil first, and if you're being cautious, add a few drops to a carrier oil such as almond), using a room diffuser or a lavender pillow, or using a linens spray on your pillowcase.

And, bonus: if you prefer or are working toward supporting Kentucky farms and producers, you can find many of these items from local marketplaces! A good place to start would be the Kentucky Proud website. Scroll down to the "soaps and cosmetics" list to find some local producers. You can also find lavender products seasonally at local markets such as the Julietta Market at Greyline Station, the Lexington Farmers Market, or other farmers markets in the area.

Until next time, sweet dreams!
