Hello! Vanessa here this week. Karen is going to be talking to you about health food impostors, which reminded me of a recent interaction.

Someone asked me if there was a clear winner between animal-based burgers vs plant-based “meat-substitute” burgers. I told them that from a nutritional standpoint and nothing else, often the animal-based burger is the better choice, as the plant-based burgers can contain quite a bit more salt, fat, and fillers than one might expect. We then started talking about bean burgers and whether those were better (short answer: it depends! But the recipe for homemade bean burgers that I shared for this week is pretty dang good.).

Of course, the larger issue at play here is that it can be really challenging to be able to make a quick judgement when you’re trying to make the better choice for your nutrition and health. It can be even MORE challenging when other factors enter the equation, such as convenience, cost, preference or comfort with trying new foods. There may never be a perfect choice, but hopefully you’ll walk away from this week’s discussion channeling your inner Scooby Doo gang and feeling a bit better able to unmask some (nutrition) impostors!
